224/366 Today marks the first time I am posting an image taken with a large format camera and from my first excursion with it to boot. While the idea is simple, the committing of an idea to a photographic medium, the process itself is complex, well at least for the user when compared to a modern digital camera. I see similarities when examining these tree roots. The goal is simple, to nourish and support the tree, but the tangled web of the roots speaks of the complexity of the task. And laid bare for all to see due to erosion.

While trees are amongst my favorite subjects in LF photography, I hadn’t thought about these similarities before. Interesting idea.

Thanks Christian. You could say I philosophise about trees and life in general quite a lot. 🙂
Do you have some favourite LF images of trees in your collection? I’d love to get some inspiration for my next shoot!

I had to go have a look myself… didn’t scan a lot so far.
I like to finish my LF photos as cayanotypes, here’s one I like a lot, directly from the 5×7″ negative:

and here’s the blog category “Planfilm” of my older blog, a few tree photos in 9x12cm start at page 6:

Sigh, replying for the third time as WordPress is being a right royal pain in the behind.
Lovely images, Christian! My favourite is definitely “Minutenlanges Wasser” even if the subject is not a tree. That image came out fantastically!

Hi, yes, this very image has the potential to become an all-time favourite of mine as well. I’m already using it in different alterations, e.g. here and here.
And in that case there’s also a making-of (just in case you’re as interested in gear as i temporarily am ;-))
But you did see that the reflections in the upper part are actually willow trees?
😉

Sorry Christian, your reply ended up in the spam box for some reason.
The set up for the photo was very impressive. How did you manage to pre-visualise the scene given the angle you ended up working at?
No, I had no idea that the reflections in the upper part were from willow trees. Lovely!
The framed print looks fantastic!

Hi Brad, no problem, seems like WP commenting is somewhat unreliable all over the place… And pre-visualizing my photos must be quite entertaining for bystanders, as it often involves me lying flat in the dirt 🙂
